Mother’s Day Flowers

I did a sketch yesterday to share at Urban Sketchers Chicago virtual sketch-meet. We have a theme, do sketches, then post them on Facebook. Pretty fun! The theme was spring and left a lot of leeway for sketch ideas, so I sketched a pot of flowers that I bought for my mom several days ago. I have enjoyed their vibrant pink color for a few days and know she’ll enjoy them in her home now. I started out just laying down watercolor, building up the values, then I went back with an XS Faber Castell Pitt pen and sketched in the details.

I also wanted to show a close-up of the flower blooms, so added this notation in the corner. I deepened values even more for the foil wrapper, did some spattering and brought in my white Gelly roll pen for a few additional details. And here is the finished sketch:

I loved working with all that riotous hot pink! I don’t use that color much, so it’s always fun to slather it on when I can, and flowers are a great time to do that!
