October Wrap Up and Inktober

I thought I’d post a few more fall sketches before the month turns to November tomorrow!

I sketched our neighbor’s Halloween inflatables in their yard a few weeks ago. I couldn’t resist the green monster!

I did some fun online classes that stretched my ink-making skills. I was inspired by the concept of “Inktober”, where artists do ink drawings for the month of October and post them online. These exercises forced me to work from my imagination, and experiment, which I don’t normally do. It was a fun change!

Here is a picture of my supplies:

I tried inking characters with pens, working with thick ink (Speedball in a tube) and a roll-on brayer and a palette knife (birch trees). Here are a few examples:

On the dog below, I rolled out a texture on toned paper (it was actually upside down). I turned it right-side up, saw a shape that looked like a dog’s face, so I drew ears and used purple acrylics for the nose and eyes. Working from imagination is a challenge for me!

Back to on-location sketching… I sketched with friends at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis a few weeks ago and was moved by the location, grounds, and treasures I found. I decided to do vignettes of things that interested me on a two page layout.

Here are a couple close-ups of the sketch pages…

Finally, as it snows when I write this, I sketched just 3 days ago near my home. A large Versa-Drill/truck were at a construction site, so I sketched that vehicle (I hadn’t sketched one before). Watercolor was added at home.

These all just a few selections of sketches this month or so. Thanks for reading my blog, and I hope you enjoyed them! October was a fun time to experiment, what types of sketching or drawing are you experimenting with?
