I recently traveled to Washington and the Vancouver area. Sketcher Fest in Edmonds, WA, brought together hundreds of travel sketching enthusiasts from around the world in a beautiful coastal town. I enjoyed a few hours in Seattle, and stayed in Edmonds over the weekend. I went to a workshop, artists talks, and a sketchbook “fair” highlighting sketcher’s work from the US, Portugal, France, Poland, and more. It was an engaging weekend. I worked in an 18-panel accordian-style sketchbook with pen on location and added watercolors when I had time. Here is a short video of my first few days:
After the weekend in Edmonds, our family traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia, took a ferry, and went to Vancouver Island to travel around and near the city of Victoria. Here is a great map that shows Victoria and the surrounding towns. Here is my second video clip which highlights a little of Edmonds and the beginning of our trip to Canada:
The next set of sketches show some of the places we went outside Victoria, including Butchart Gardens, and a hike to a waterfall.
We drove to the coast and saw Hatley Castle, which had amazing grounds and was on a college campus.
We drove into beautiful Victoria (capital city of British Columbia) and wandered down to Fisherman’s Wharf. Floating homes, restaurants, gift shops, and harbor seaplanes greeted us. I sketched a fishing boat and sea plane too.
We walked several blocks along the harbor to the Legislative assembly building, where we took a tour and walked around the grounds. I just had to sketch the amazing architecture!
We ate wonderful food, saw many more sights than I could record, and had a great time with family! To get back to Seattle, we took a ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, WA, and drove to Seattle from there. Because you have to arrive early to the ferry terminal, I sketched cars in line and passengers on board. I would highly recommend a Victoria vacation to anyone! There is so much to see and do, and it was a great change to be on the coast and experience a different country, if only a few hours from where I live. Enjoy!
