Last week I braved 25 degrees and wind and drove to Stillwater to view the World Snow Sculpting Championship and sketch. It was a Friday, so not too busy. I brought a blue Micron pen to sketch, knowing it would be fast and furious in the cold. No taking my time. Everyone was bundled up, but still enjoying the sights.

Teams from across the world participated in this sculpting event. I’ve seen ice sculptures but not ones made from snow. These were quite intricate and amazing. A couple favorites I sketched:

This one with the elephant, by a team from India, captured my interest. I like how they had carved the back out of the elephant and designed sky scrapers, a city scene. It’s title was “At What Cost!”

I stood in the cold and wind and sketched very quickly. After about 35 minutes, I jumped back into my car in the parking lot to warm up. On my way home, I stopped in another town, Bayport. I’ve always liked sketching at the marina there. I like the blue shrink-wrapped boats they have for the winter. So I sat in my car and sketched through the window.

I was warm, so I spent more time and added watercolors too. I like the one bare boat with no wrap peeping out from the sea of other boats.
