I recently spent 9 days in beautiful Kauai. I took a Hahnamuhle zig zag sketchbook and worked in pen as I traveled around the island with my husband. Later, I added watercolors, often in the evenings. The stunning rugged beauty of “The Garden Island” cannot be fully captured in sketches or photos, but here were my attempts anyways…
My first video clip shows time we spent at the McBryde and Allerton gardens, a cultural site and beach in Poipu in the south and Waimea canyon and the Napali coast in the west.

The Waimea Canyon is stunning and known as the “Grand Canyon” of the Pacific. It is 10 miles long and up to 3,000 feet deep. The rusty color is from iron oxide in the layers.

Kauai is composed of a shield volcano. The Napali coast is accessible by boat or helicopter, and looking down at it from this overlook, I can see why. It is steep, treacherous, and remote.

We were intentional about going to as many beaches as we could. We went to 14 of them, and they are all beautiful and different. Some had driftwood, some had black lava rocks and black crabs that scurried around in crevices. Others had surging surf and waves, still others had quiet tides and coral remnants. This clip shows me enjoying the brown sugar sand between my toes, and the Kauai Hindu monastery lush tropical grounds.
These clips show the first half of the sketchbook completed. Watch for Part 2 to see the rest of the book and more fun sketches of Kauai!
I was fortunate to visit Kauai many times as we had a timeshare there. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Thanks for sharing your sketches and bringing back so many wonderful memories!!!
Thank you, Kathy! It was truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thanks for reading!
