Sketches All Directions

I’ve had fun recently trying some sketching while looking in different directions. A fall walk with my old dog got me looking on the ground while she stopped and sniffed. Luckily she is a slow walker! I brought my sketchbook and added watercolors at home after I returned.

Here are the sketches close up:

While having lunch with a friend at Eat Street Crossing in Minneapolis, I decided to turn my sketchbook vertically and draw a scene in the restaurant. This encompassed looking up a couple stories with windows and stairs connecting it all. I sketched in a wonky loose style, which you can see in the video here:

Another time found me in a hospital lobby waiting on a family member. I sketched a doctor in the seating area near me and also his reflection in a nearby mirror. It was fun to get more than one angle of his face.

Finally, I sketched with our Urban Sketching group at Asia Mall in Eden Prairie MN. What a great place to sketch groceries, restaurants, stores, and people! I sketched several elements including food, people in a restaurant, lanterns below me (I was on a balcony), and live crabs below me in a bin in the grocery area.

Next time you are out and about sketching, I encourage you to try sketching from different vantage points, it enlivens your sketch and gives it a different feel. Happy sketching!
