Last weekend I sketched with the Urban Sketchers Twin Cities at the Como Lakeside Pavilion in St. Paul. I sketched this beautiful building a year ago, but in the summertime.

This time, it was November. I have kayaked here before, and there’s a cute little boathouse down by the lake. The weather was balmy and in the 60’s, so we could be outside in blue skies and sunshine. So I chose to sketch the boathouse down the lane. The red color caught my eye and I went from there!

As you can see from the first sketch, the pavilion has beautiful architecture. Large arched windows, columns, it’s truly a gift to the city of St. Paul and those who come to it. Home to Dock and Paddle restaurant and space for concerts and receptions, it’s a gem! I sat across from it and saw some ladies enjoying the sunshine and eating lunch together. I was drawn to the architecture and decided to also draw the windows…. After time with ink, watercolor, brush pen, and white Gelly Roll pen, I think I got it down….

We lucked out with weather for our event. We had a beautiful fall afternoon to sketch and make new friends. And I came home with some fun sketches and memories of a very special pavilion!
